How To Remove Stains From Silk Clothing

With a delicate fabric like silk, it’s hard to imagine what to do when you accidentally spill or drop something. If you’re not sure how to remove a stain from silk clothing, follow this simple guide.

What To Remember When Cleaning Silk

Whether it’s for spot cleaning or pre-treating before washing your silk garment, it’s important to remember these points.

  • Check for colourfastness- The last thing you would want is the fabric losing its colour. Test clothes for colourfastness before treating stains.
  • Don’t rub the stain- Gently blot instead.
  • Wash gently- Use a mild detergent and wash gently in cold water.
  • Avoid machine drying- The heat is will damage it and cause shrinkage.
  • Don’t use bleach Using bleach on silk will damage the natural fibres.

How To Remove Stains From Silk Clothing

Treat the stain as soon as possible and gently blot the stain to remove excess before commencing stain removal. Use a paper towel, clean cloth or cotton wool to treat the stain.

  • For a gentle stain remover, dilute a few tablespoons of either white vinegar or lemon with two cups of lukewarm water.
  • For tougher stains, you can either increase the ratio of vinegar to water or dilute a few tablespoons of alcohol/ ammonia with lukewarm water.

You can also choose to use a branded stain remover made for delicate garments. If you desire a more professional approach to remove tough stains, book a collection with a laundry service.

How To Clean A Silk Tie

One thing you should know when it comes to cleaning silk ties is that they should never be machine washed. If your silk tie needs cleaning, it should be spot-cleaned or,  as a last resort, dry cleaned.

How To Clean A Silk Tie

  • Rubbing Alcohol
  • Absorbent Powder
  • Stain remover

When it comes to cleaning a silk tie, it must be done gently and without using water. The reason being is that water can add to the stain and create a ‘water stain’ which is difficult to remove. It can also weaken the fabric fibres.

For spot-cleaning a silk tie, always remember to remove excess stains immediately by blotting it with a dry cloth or towel before going to treat the stain.

Here are some effective methods to spot-treat your tie without using water.

Rubbing alcohol

This method is great for non-greasy food or liquid stains.

  1. Dampen a clean cloth with rubbing alcohol and dab the stain lightly until stain is removed.
  2. Immediately dry the stain with a hairdryer.
  3. Repeat if necessary.
Absorbent Powder

This method is perfect for oil and grease stains that are harder to remove.

  1. Blot away excess stain with a dry cloth.
  2. Sprinkle talcum powder or cornflour over stain and leave it over night.
  3. On the following day, gently dust off the powder.
  4. If stain is not completely removed, repeat process again if necessary.
Stain remover

If none of the above methods seems to work for you, consider investing in a stain remover designed for silk fabrics. The chemical agents in these stain removers are fabric-friendly and are not as harsh as general stain removers.

Dry cleaning your silk tie frequently will, over time, damage the fabric fibres due to the solvents used in the cleaning process. If you need your tie professionally dry cleaned, Laundryheap will be able to get the job done for you.

Caring For Silk Ties

When it comes to generally taking care of your silk tie, here are some things to note.

  • Never rub stains. Instead, gently blot or dab the stain with a clean cloth.
  • To remove creases, have your silk tie steamed or pressed as this is safer than ironing where the heat comes into direct contact with the fabric.
  • When storing ties, either hang them up or roll them loosely and store them away neatly with enough room for ventilation.

How To Wash Silk Clothing

What comes to your mind when you think about cleaning a delicate silk fabric? If your answer is wash with extreme care and caution, then you have the right idea.

Cleaning silk can come across as complicated because it requires a lot more labour than normal clothes. If you own silk garments, then you know that some just can’t be thrown into the washing machine.

So, here’s a quick guide for the proper way of washing silk.

How To Wash Silk Clothing

  • Read the label first

Trust me when I say this, the label knows what’s best! There are instructions on the label for a reason; we must follow a specific procedure to get things done the right way. Check the label to see if its machine washable, hand washable or dry clean only. This is the very first crucial step in the know-how of washing your silk properly.

  • Wash gently in cold water

whatever way the label says you must wash your clothes, always wash them in cold water. For a machine wash, use the delicate cold wash cycle and for a hand wash fill a basin with cold water. This maintains the delicacy of the fabric along with the help of a gentle detergent. Avoid washing silk with heavy garments and only wash with similar fabrics.

  • Dry naturally

Just as you would do to dry yourself after a shower, use a towel to dry silk. Simply place the silk garment on a flat towel and roll it gently like you’re making a Swiss roll; this will get rid of the excess water. Then, hang or lay out flat to completely dry. Avoid using the tumble dryer as this will ruin the delicate fabric.

If that’s too much to handle, let Laundryheap take care of your silk garments. We pride ourselves in handling with complete care and returning your clothes in great condition. Besides, it will make your life that much easier.

If you have any questions or comments, we’re all ears 😊
