How Often Should You Wash Your Jackets

Shorter nights, and colder temperatures – winter is truly in full swing! Luckily, we have our ever-trusted jackets to keep us warm. While they do a great job in providing us comfort and warmth, they do need washing to maintain their quality. But here’s the million-dollar question: how often should you wash your jackets?

How often should you wash your jackets in washing machines

First things first, it’s important to know that over-washing your jacket isn’t the answer. Too much washing can wear out the fabric and diminish that cosy insulation we all love. On the flip side, neglecting to wash your jacket altogether is like asking for a one-way ticket to the land of mysterious smells and questionable stains. So, what’s the right balance when it comes to washing your jackets?

The Basics

Generally, we recommend washing your jackets once or twice in the winter. If you go out a lot and wear it frequently, twice a season might be more suitable. However, if you don’t wear it much, a good rule of thumb is to give it a wash at least once a year before storing it away for the warmer months. Of course, there will always be times when your clothes is wet due to a heavy rain or catches dirt (we’ll get to that later).

Spot Cleaning

Washing machine is great but sometimes, it isn’t necessary for two reasons; the care label might not recommend it and your jacket may not be that dirty for it to go on a full wash. For minor stains or dirt, a bit of spot cleaning can work wonders. Pour mild detergent on the stain and gently rub to get your jacket looking as good as new.

However, if you are going to put your jacket inside the washing machine, be sure to zip it to avoid any tangling up.

Air-dry instead of Tumble Drying

To get the best cleaning results, pick the best day and time to wash your jacket. This way, you can allow to air dry outside and the sun will do its job in drying your jacket. We don’t recommend using the tumble dryer because the high heat can damage the fabric.

Recap:

  • Wash your jacket once a season (or twice if you’re a frequent wearer).
  • Spot clean for minor stains.
  • Choose a sunny day for washing and let it air dry.

And there you have it – the answer to the question how often should you wash your jackets!
